Foraging 101 Saturday, October 14th
Foraging — which is the act of gathering plants from the wild — has been a large part of human tradition. While in our modern, Euro-centric, capitalist world, we’ve become used to picking things up at the grocery store or even online, nature invites us to remember a more reciprocal and connected way of accessing food, medicine, and craft.
We will learn about seasonal plants and what they can be used for. Topics will include safety, sustainability, identification and harvesting tips, preservation techniques, and a hands-on demonstration with a take-home creation.
FNL Program Director, Sarah Kacevich, will take us through the fields, forest edge, and woods to look for items that could be edible, medicinal, or have other uses - like dyeing and fire starting. We'll end our walk with a glass of cider, after watching Sarah fresh press apples using a cider press.
Participants are encouraged to wear long pants and socks, sunscreen and bug spray, and sturdy shoes; and to bring a water bottle.
This event is intended for educational purposes only. Information is not meant to diagnose or treat injuries or illnesses of any kind. Any concerns about introducing a new plant into one's body, or possible allergies, should be addressed with a medical professional. Participants should expect to walk at a slow to moderate pace, on uneven surfaces and gentle slopes, throughout the duration of the event.
