Farrington Nature Linc (FNL) is looking for an exceptional leader to join our team as Program Director (PD). Established in the early 1900’s, our mission is to enhance the well-being of children from low-income communities through a connection with the natural world. Our 75 acres of woodlands, fields and ponds near Boston are dedicated to providing respite and inspiration for children who might not otherwise have this opportunity. IMG_1795The PD serves as an organizational expert in youth development, environmental education, and hands-on inquiry-based learning. S/he is responsible for building and ensuring program capacity, quality, and impact. The PD will work closely with the Executive Director to set program goals and priorities. The PD serves as the lead program administrator, supporting and supervising all functions of the program, including: daily operations; staff and volunteer management; development and implementation of policies and procedures; outreach and program logistics; program planning, evaluation, and data collection; curriculum creation and refinement; family, partner, community, and board engagement; and running programs when necessary.

This position is full-time, based at our site in Lincoln, MA, with a significant amount of time out of the office traveling to program sites or off site meetings, and supervising and implementing programs. Some evenings and weekends will be required. We are looking for a Program Director who is hungry to dig into all aspects of this work, and grow with the position and organization.

Key Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Program Development, Implementation, and Evaluation
• Strategic Program Planning & Development: Provide on-going leadership in strategic program planning and development to ensure that FNL programming continues to evolve to best meet the needs of our participants and ensures a fun and rewarding environment for participants and staff. Develop and implement new programs and curriculum as needed, including developing and implementing strategies that will maximize connections among Farrington’s different program pathways.20024050_1772973892727677_6918596805244005089_o

• Program Implementation, Oversight & Leadership: Oversee all booking, implementation and leading of programs, ensuring adherence to FNL’s program model. Communicate with partner organizations in advance of programs to ensure clear expectations and goals for experience and attending staff/chaperones. Track all visiting group certificates of insurance, contracts, scholarships, invoices, and payments for all programming. Programming includes on-site field trips and on- and off-site after-school programs for youth, mostly elementary age, of groups from 5-80 in all four seasons of the year, as well as teen youth development, individual youth mentorship, and youth worker professional development. This includes running programs in all weather, in many situations that can be challenging with a cheerful eye to motivating all youth and staff to have fun and engage. Engage in outreach to current program user groups and to new groups to acquire program bookings. Follow up with all contracts, certificates of insurance etc.

• Curriculum Development & Documentation: Maintain and enhance existing Farrington Experience and Explore curriculum. Create and document Extend curriculum, to ensure a coherent and impactful curriculum that is developmentally appropriate and relevant across FNL cohorts, locations, and age groups.• Planning, Schedule, & Budget Development: Collaborate with the ED to develop program goals and annual timeline/calendar, ensuring that programmatic, operational, and administrative benchmarks are achieved. Work with the Executive Director to develop a budget for the different programs and manage use of funds in a fiscally responsible manner.

• Partnerships: Maintain and strengthen current relationships while building new ones to achieve organizational goals. Develop partnerships as appropriate to maintain equipment, property support, program planning and evaluation.

• Outcomes Evaluation: Evaluate programs, ensuring consistent tracking and analysis of programmatic data and reporting on progress towards outcomes. Continue to develop a consistent and effective evaluation framework to ensure programmatic and quality goals are met.

• Trainings: Provide professional development opportunities for partner organizations to increase their staff’s capacity in building nature connections for youth. Present annually at relevant local and state-wide conferences, as appropriate.

• Oversight of Property for Program Use: Monitor buildings, trails and areas of the property used for FNL programs. Coordinate any necessary repairs or improvements with the Property Manager. Plan and maintain garden and source and care for summer farm animals.

Risk Management & Policy Development
• Policy Implementation & Updates: Work closely with ED to review, update, develop and implement programmatic policies and procedures. Lead review and implementation of risk management practices including program operations, staff training requirements, and other areas as needed. Ensure staff/volunteers are appropriately trained in procedures.

Staff (and Volunteer) Management & Support
• Positive Work Environment: Create a motivating and rewarding environment that promotes high quality program implementation and continuous learning. Maintain an internal culture that reflects FNL’s values of mutual respect, experiential learning, and a deep respect and appreciation of our youth, community and the environment.

• Staff Management & Evaluation: Directly supervise, coach, and schedule a multi-faceted year-round program staff to ensure that program goals are met. Staff includes 3-4 part-time instructors, and a full-time summer staff of ~12, which includes teens. Responsible for hiring, training, and evaluating performance.

• Volunteer Management & Evaluation: Recruit, train, and schedule volunteers for one-time events and regular programmatic support.

• Youth Staff Alumni Support: Regularly connect with alumni staff, serving as a long-term mentor and supporter. Connect alumni to FNL opportunities and other community resources to aid them in furthering their development.

Fundraising & Communications
• Fundraising Support: Work closely with the ED to support grant proposals, expenditure and grant reporting, donor meetings, donor site-visits, and organization events.

• Communications: Assist with cultivating and stewarding the FNL brand. Support the development of marketing and communications materials such as the annual report, infographic, and news articles. Represent the organization, as requested, at public events and speaking engagements.

Required Qualifications:
• Personal commitment to, and deep understanding of, FNL’s mission to connect youth from low-income urban communities with nature.
• Love of nature and the outdoors that includes experience and a desire to work outdoors.
• Personal qualities of maturity, flexibility, creativity, ability to manage multiple demands, strong work ethic, roll-up-my-sleeves attitude and a sense of humor.
• Cultural sensitivity and humility in working with diverse and low-income populations, with an understanding of systemic and institutionalized racism facing communities of color.
• A successful track record of program management with at least 8 years of professional experience including 2+ years in a leadership role with responsibility for managing programs and teams, ideally at an education or youth development organization serving low-income communities.
• Outstanding verbal, written, and listening skills. Openness in communicating up, down, and across an organization.
• Knowledge of adolescent development, urban youth, and positive youth development practices. Knowledge and experience with environmental education and program evaluation best practices, strongly desired.
• First Aid/CPR Training with preference for Wilderness First Aid (or willingness to obtain).
• Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and move objects weighing up to 30 pounds several feet. Physical ability to negotiate hilly terrain, dirt roads and dirt and gravel trails. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents requiring immediate action and ability to direct others in appropriately responding to emergencies in natural light and low light situations.
• Valid driver’s license, personal automobile insurance, safe driving record and daily access to a car.
• Applicants must agree to a CORI check as part of the job screening, but evidence of a criminal record is not necessarily an impediment to hiring. A copy of our CORI policy is available on request.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Bilingual – English and a language in frequent use in the Cambridge/Boston Public School Systems.
• Master’s degree in education, environmental education, social work or a similar and related field.

Salary & Benefits: Salary range $45,000-$55,000. Eleven paid holidays, 25 days paid time off, and ongoing professional development opportunities.
